Sabarimala Temple, located on the Sabarimala hill in the Periyar Tiger Reserve, is dedicated to Lord Ayyappa, who is worshipped as the embodiment of dharma, self-discipline, and devotion. The temple is renowned for its unique pilgrimage traditions, including the 41-day vratham (austerity period) observed by devotees before undertaking the pilgrimage. Pilgrims traditionally carry the sacred Irumudi Kettu, a twin-compartment offering bundle, and trek through forested paths to reach the temple. The shrine is open during specific periods of the year, particularly during the Mandala-Makaravilakku season, which attracts millions of devotees from across India and abroad. The temple is known for promoting values of equality and brotherhood, with devotees addressing one another as "Swami" regardless of social status. The sacred 18 steps, known as Pathinettampadi, hold immense spiritual significance and are central to the pilgrimage experience.

From Pamba, devotees undertake a trek of approximately 5 kilometers through hilly terrain to reach the temple. The nearest airports are Cochin International Airport and Trivandrum International Airport, while Chengannur Railway Station is one of the closest railheads.
